From the Speaking Womb of the Desert: Selected Stories from Jordan explores numerous models of short stories written by Jordanian women in the second half of the twentieth century, with the intent of presenting a substantive representation of Jordanian women writers who I hope will be an inspiration to other writers all over the corners of the globe. It is the first book of its kind in Jordan and in the Middle East. The selected short stories, which embody topics that include sexism, gender inequality, politics concerning women, and diverse social issues, are a platform for Jordanian women writers to harvest their feminist and political spirit. The writers express their viewpoints, thoughts, values, desires and discontents, and they also link identity politics to broader feminist ideologies and social categories. Their agentic voices and their literary legacies can be best portrayed as supporters of gender equity and of social justice.
