Rarely in the history pf any nation has any project had such impact on the country's economic and political structure as the Aswan High dam. The nationalization of the suez canal, the suez war of 1956, and other major political and economic developments in the middle east are all related directly or indirectly to egypt's decision to construct the high dam. This book, based on a ph.D. dessertation originally submitted by the author at the University of california, los angeles, is one of the frst independent endeavours to test the economic viability of egypt's famous development project.Different investment criteria implied by the economic theory of choice over time are applied under various assumptions about benfit and cost streams to compute the present value and the rate of return of the project. Problems of evaporation, seepage, sedimentation (silt) and degradation are all discussed in detail and are incorporated into the cost stream of the project. This book is of primary importance to all those who are interested in the economic, political and technical aspects of the high dam project as well as the evaluation of any public investment project.
